Tragedy Strikes UDS: Two Students Reportedly Dead During Third Trimester Field Programme - Full Story

The University for Development Studies (UDS) is a renowned institution in Ghana, known for its academic excellence and community engagement. One of its mandates is the Third Trimester Field Programme (TTFPP), a practical training program for students. However, despite its educational value, the TTFPP has been plagued by significant challenges, including transportation and accommodation issues.

Previously, the university transported students to their communities from campus, but in 2020, the policy changed, requiring students to move to dispatch centers for transportation to their respective communities. Recently, a group of students was involved in an accident on their way to the dispatch center, fortunately without any fatalities. However, sources attributed the accident to reckless driving, leading many to believe that the university could have prevented the tragedy by transporting students itself.

Sadly, two UDS students, a level Abubakari Khadija a 100 Public Health student and a level 200 Development Education student, have allegedly lost their lives during the TTFPP. The university community has expressed concerns about the TTFPP, and some individuals, including Mr. Bruce Kambotuu, the Central SRC President-elect, and Mr. Azure Moses, 2023/2024 SRC presidential candidate, have shared condolence messages with the families and student body.

Mr. Kambotuu has also acknowledged the challenges students are facing in this year's TTFPP, hinting at the possibility of cancellation in the future. The causes of death have not been identified, but the level 200 Development Education student (name withheld) was allegedly involved in an accident along the Yendi road. The university authority has not officially commented on the incident.

Some reactions on social media

As the university community mourns the loss of these two students, it is essential to reconsider the TTFPP's safety measures and logistics.

Should the TTFPP be reconsidered or cancelled due to safety concerns?

Toase SHS: Where Teachers Trade Grades for Cash*

Third-year students at Toase Senior High School (SHS) in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal are facing a shocking situation as their teachers demand 800 cedis from each student to guarantee their success in the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to sources, the teachers have promised to help or assist the students during the exams, ensuring they pass, in exchange for the payment. This blatant exam malpractice has left many students and parents feeling outraged.

To make matters worse, the teachers have already collected 110 cedis from approximately 2,200 students as "appreciation fees" - a payment whose purpose is unclear.

The students are scheduled to begin their WASSCE exams next week, and the situation has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the school's examination process.

We urge the relevant authorities to investigate this matter immediately and take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the examination process and hold those responsible accountable.

Napo Under Fire Again For Disrespecting Late Atta Mills- Video Drops

NAPO under fire again for ‘disrespecting’ late Atta Mills – Video

Recall that recently, the current running mate for Dr Bawumia was severely chided over his controversial comments about Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling in Kumasi, NAPO firmly stated that no President in Ghana’s history including former President Nkrumah had performed better than President Akufo-Addo.

His comments generated massive backlash from the majority of the public which forced him to apologise in the subsequent days.

Well, NAPO has made another blunder while speaking to a section of NPP stalwarts.

While addressing his party members, NAPO restored to revering all the ex-presidents until it got to the late Atta Mill’s turn and called him different tune.

According to Ghanaians who have come across the video, using “Baako na owu y3” to describe the Late President Mills is so disrespectful.

Adongo Narrates How Dr. Bawumia, NPP Promised ‘Chef Failatu’ Performance But Delivered ‘Chef Smith’

The Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, Isaac Adongo, has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party for subjecting Ghanaians to a wave of economic hardship coupled with false hopes and promises to turn the country’s fortune around.

According to Adongo, the current economic crisis has exposed the incompetence of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was hailed as an economic ‘whizkid’ by members of the NPP.

In a write-up authored by the Bolgatanga Central lawmaker, Adongo lambasted the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for failing to deliver on its promises to the Ghanaian people since it assumed office.

He described their tenure as disastrous and blamed the current government for plunging the entire country into an economic mess through bad policies and actions.

“The annoying thing about all of this is that the NPP government ignored sound advice that could have saved everyone this mess by putting partisanship before prudence in the so-called financial sector clean-up exercise. They used the Bank of Ghana and Ernest Addison to collapse people’s businesses, illegally print money, and devalue the Cedi.

“They promised to reduce taxes but have imposed the most draconian. They trampled on truth and transparency requirements and prioritized corrupt and nepotistic procurement and contracting. They promised a Messi in a Ronaldo, called a Chef Failatu, but delivered a ‘Chef Smith’ in a Bawumia, to whom the word economics is now taboo.

“To think that in all of this, NPP government functionaries would show up and nonchalantly ask to be forgiven because of votes in the election season is even very distasteful, to say the least. People with a reputation for integrity would have stepped away and asked for a clean start. But no, these are a group of people who are out for their interest, not the interest of the average Ghanaian.

“The families of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, together with their associates and influential members of the NPP party, have maintained a considerable degree of insulation from the prevailing challenges in our nation for a duration exceeding five years,” portions of his write-up indicated.

Adongo further expressed disappointment that NPP government officials were asking for forgiveness due to votes in the election season, rather than taking responsibility for their actions and accused them of prioritizing their own interests over those of the average Ghanaian.

Meanwhile, the ruling NPP has blamed external factors such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war for the current economic crisis.

During a recent townhall meeting in Accra, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin apologized to Ghanaians for the hardships they were facing.

He mentioned that the government had implemented the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) as a necessary step to restructure the country’s debt and secure an IMF loan facility to address the economic crisis.

Family Seeks Justice For Final-Year Student Almost Killed By Teachers - Checkout The Shocking Reason

A 19-year-old final-year student of St Andrews Senior High School at Sefwi Asawinso in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality has allegedly been abused by his teachers after he reportedly refused to cut his bushy hair.

According to an Adom FM report, the student, Eric Amoako, was directed by his teacher to leave the class to either cut down his hair or have it combed.

Eric Amoako, however, is said to have refused to follow the teacher’s instructions, leading to an alleged exchange of words between them.

This prompted the headmaster to intervene, threatening to beat the student if he did not leave the class to have his hair shaved.

The altercation reportedly resulted in the teachers beating Eric Amoako, leaving cane marks all over his body.

Images captured show the student severely beaten and injured.

The family of Eric Amoako is, however, seeking justice for the treatment meted out to their ward.

An uncle of the victim, who spoke to the news outlet, said Amoako was sent to the SDA clinic at Sefwi Asawinso for treatment and was subsequently discharged.

“The child went for classes this morning and after the classes, he wanted to get something to eat. He met his teacher who said his hair was bushy. His teacher just held him by his uniform and used the cane on him. I saw the child and asked him if he provoked him but he said no.

“The child is a very humble child. He cooks for his father. They operate a chop bar in the village. He is not known to be somebody who is abusive. It’s serious. The child did not provoke them. It’s about the hair,” his uncle told Adom FM in an interview.

Meanwhile, the two teachers were reportedly invited by the police for questioning but have since been granted bail.

High Court Clears Tobinco Of Fake Drugs Import Allegations

The High Court in Accra has cleared Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited (TPL) and its Group Chairman, Elder Dr. Samuel Amo Tobbin, of any wrongdoing in the case filed against the company by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), accusing it of importing fake drugs into the country.

According to a press release issued on Sunday, August 11, 2024, by Tobinco, the court presided over by Her Ladyship Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, in a ruling dated July 29, 2024, stated that the company never imported fake drugs into Ghana.

The company indicated that it sued the FDA on July 19, 2019, when it was led by its former Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, accusing it of abuse of statutory powers.

Tobinco indicated that Dr. Kwabena Opuni, between September and December 2013, targeted it under the pretence that it was importing fake drugs.

Tobinco stated that the FDA in 2013, during its adversarial operation, locked its warehouses across the country, causing needless embarrassment to the company and its group chairman.

It added that the FDA further banned Bliss GVS Pharma Limited, the then principal business partner of Tobinco, from exporting drugs into Ghana and labelled their drugs as fake, leading to the confiscation of its drugs from customers.

The court has now ruled that it was unlawful for the FDA to stop Tobinco from selling its products. It also ruled that the authority erred in barring Bliss GVS Pharma Limited from exporting drugs into Ghana without approval from the Ministry of Health.

Below are briefs from the court ruling shared by Tobinco:

1. The court determined that Tobinco did not import fake drugs into the Ghanaian market.

2. The court affirmed that the acts of the FDA and its Chief Executive Officer at the time, Dr. Opuni, constituted misfeasance of a public office, i.e., an abuse of the FDA’s statutory powers and duties.

3. The court confirmed that after Tobinco was fined because some of its drugs had expired in terms of registration, the FDA, led by Dr. Opuni, failed or refused to register the drugs that had not expired in terms of registration.

4. The court found that Tobinco’s contention was that the FDA’s former CEO, Dr. Opuni, targeted the company without any reason, as Dr. Opuni’s departure led to the registration of the same drugs under a new CEO, Mr. Hudu Mogtari.

5. The court acknowledged the coercion of Tobinco’s CEO and the Director of Bliss GVS Pharma, Mr. Kamath, to sign the so-called confession statements.

6. The court explained that a review of both documents confirmed that the wording is the same, with the only differences being the letterhead and the names and signatures of the signatories.

7. The court expressed its view that if Dr. Tobbin and Mr. Kamath had written the documents separately, it is unlikely the wording would have been identical.
8. The court also confirmed that the FDA took the letterheads of Tobinco and Bliss GVS Pharma from Tobinco’s offices, provided them to BNI, now NIB, and used them to type out statements for them to sign.

9. The court confirmed that it was unlawful for the FDA to prohibit the sale of Tobinco’s products without obtaining an Executive Instrument from the Minister of Health.

10. The court ruled that it was unlawful for the FDA to ban Bliss GVS Pharma Limited from exporting drugs into Ghana without the Minister’s approval of an Executive Instrument.

11. The court affirmed that the unlawful conduct of the FDA and its former CEO, Dr. Opuni, caused substantial damage and loss to the plaintiff’s business.
