GTEC Directs UCC Vice-Chancellor To Step Aside

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to step aside, appointing Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as acting Vice-Chancellor.

In a statement dated September 19, 2025, GTEC noted that Prof. Boampong remains in office despite surpassing the mandatory retirement age of 60, in violation of Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution“Article 199(1) states that a public officer shall, except as otherwise provided in this Constitution, retire from the public service on attaining the age of sixty years,” the Commission explained.

GTEC clarified that the role of Vice-Chancellor falls under public service, as defined in the University of Cape Coast Act, 1992 (PNDCL 278), and must comply with the compulsory retirement provision. The Commission also cited Statute 8.2 of the UCC Statutes, 2016, which allows a Vice-Chancellor to serve an additional term only if it does not exceed the retirement threshold.

Additionally, GTEC directed the UCC Governing Council to suspend the process of appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor until the Cape Coast High Court rules on a suit filed regarding the matter.

Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed the arrests during a briefing.

According to her, at about 3:25 a.m., two armed men broke into the victim’s home and made away with gold jewelry, a laptop, wristwatches, handbags, clothing, and cash totaling $5,000 and GHS 21,645.

Police officers responded swiftly to the scene, where a machete, metal cutter, and a T-shirt believed to have been left behind by the suspects were retrieved as evidence.

The crime scene was processed, and investigations began immediately.

Acting on intelligence, the police arrested 26-year-old Prince Opoku, also known as Agyenkwa, and Nigerian national Jennifer Nweke at Adenta on September 18.

“A search conducted on them revealed some of the stolen items, including jewelry, mobile phones, and large sums of cash,” COP Donkor disclosed.

The suspects later led investigators to their hideout at Abokobi, where additional stolen items belonging to the victim were recovered.

“During interrogation, suspect Opoku admitted his involvement in the crime and mentioned one Mensah, alias Taller, as his accomplice and leader of the operation,” COP Donkor added.

The Police say efforts are underway to track down the other suspects who are currently on the run.
