Why Men In Ghana Are Four Times More Likely To Die By Drowning Than Women

A recent study conducted by the School of Public Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has revealed that Ghanaian males are four times more likely to drown than females.

The research, conducted over a three-year period from 2019-2022, further shows that males aged 15 to 35, followed by children aged between 0 to five years, are the worst affected victims, constituting 40% of the 1,370 drowning fatalities that occur annually in Ghana.

Cara Aidoo, a Data Collection Supervisor with the School of Public Health at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), expressed concerns over the increasing rate of age-adjusted death associated with drowning.

As of 2020, data published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicated a drowning rate of 2.4 per 100,000 population.

However, recent figures have shown an increase to 4.4 per 1000,000 population.

In an interview with the Ghanaian Times, Cara Aidoo said a majority of the deaths occurred along river bodies, with major ones occurring at recreational centres, particularly beaches, pools and in wells.

She further voiced concerns about the lack of reporting on drowning incidents.

“People don’t report drowning incidences and that is a worry. There are many places that people are drowning on a daily basis. You hear many of these stories in the communities yet people are unaware of the need to report them,” she lamented.

Cara Aidoo called for the enforcement of existing bye-laws that ensure individuals adhere to and follow safety protocols.

“Everyone must be involved. Parents and caregivers must supervise their children. Teachers must be involved. Drowning borders on education, health, public safety, transportation, employment, law enforcement etc.

“We have bye-laws that should look at whether there is a lifeguard by a pool, whether people are on water bodies with jackets, whether drains and wells are well covered but all these bye-laws are not being enforced and we are losing lives,” she added.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 30-year-old man at Gomoa Buduburam near Obolo Estate in the Central Region for trying to sell his niece for GH¢150,000.

According to a report by Adom FM, the suspect, identified as Nana Kofi Amofa, brought his 6-year-old niece from a village, Ayirabi Nyamibetre, under the pretense of helping her parents care for her.

However, his true intention was to sell her for GH¢150,000 to use the money for a Canadian Visa.

The report indicated that the suspect had a friend now residing in Germany who advised him to sell his family relations for GH¢150,000, which he could use to pay for the visa.

The supposed friend told the accused person that he did the same thing to acquire his visa for Germany and had a contact who could provide the Canadian Visa for GH¢150,000.

Kofi Amofa followed his friend’s advice and brought his niece to Buduburam. He approached a man in Buduburam and proposed to sell his niece for GH¢150,000.

The potential buyer, realizing that the accused person was serious, reported the issue to the police station.

The Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit followed up on the matter and planned with the potential buyer to arrest the suspect when he brought his niece for the transaction.

The news report, aired on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, included a conversation between the accused person and the potential buyer in Twi, which has been transcribed as follows:

Buyer: “What did you say was the price?”

Suspect: “I thought my master settled that with you.”

Buyer: “He (the master) said when we meet we can negotiate.”

Suspect: “Didn’t he tell you the price?”

Buyer: “He did, but things are a bit difficult now. Yesterday, you mentioned 1.5 (GH¢150,000) but let me give you 1 (GH¢100,000).”

Suspect: “No, you want to spoil my business.”

Buyer: “What if I give you 1.2 (GH¢120,000)?”

Suspect: “Please, I’m begging you.”

Buyer: “You’re still insisting on the 1.5 (GH¢150,000). What language does she speak and does she attend school?”

Suspect: “She speaks Twi and she is yet to start schooling. I brought her from the village.”

Buyer: “So where do you want to travel to?”

Suspect: “Oh, Canada. I’m a heavy-duty mechanic. I have been trying but nothing has worked for me.”

Buyer: “I hope you have not told anybody about this transaction.”

Suspect: “I’ve not. You can trust me.”

5 Things Atta Mills Once Said That Reflect His Vision For A United And Peaceful Ghana

Today, July 24, 2024, marks the 12th anniversary of the passing of Professor John Evans Atta Mills, a former President of Ghana.

He was a symbol of peace and a champion of democracy, remembered for his compassion, selflessness, and dedication to the nation.

GhanaWeb revisits five memorable quotes that reflect his vision for a united and peaceful Ghana as compiled by pulse.com.gh.

Unity and Inclusion

“I have always said that I will be President for all Ghanaians, whether they voted for me or not and without consideration for which part of the country they come from. It will be my duty as President to heal wounds and unite our dear nation.”

Peace and Cooperation

“As we approach the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections, it is my prayer and hope that we shall continue to preserve and maintain the peace, remain united, and focused as people with one destiny. We can hardly achieve meaningful development if the citizenry, on whose behalf we are managing the country, does not support and cooperate with us.”

Fairness and Justice

“I will not condone actions that will pit one citizen against the other as a way of settling political scores. That is unacceptable and will not be the Ghanaian way of doing things. The Ghanaian way should be that, under the Rule of Law, and with the benchmark of due process, any violations of the laws of Ghana will be addressed in a manner that is fair, balanced, and right in the sight of God.”

Reflection and Progress

“As a people, our greatest achievements have come when we have lived up to the ideals that unite rather than divide us and have attached ourselves to a common-sense purpose. Let this day not just see us enjoying just the holiday part of it; let us find time to reflect on the way forward as we strive to build a Better Ghana.”

Sustaining Peace

“As a nation, we have no other option but to “sustain the peace” we are enjoying in order to broaden the frontiers of our democracy and development. At no point in time should we take the peace we are enjoying for granted. Our fallen heroes and Founding Fathers toiled to give us this dear nation, and we dare not destroy what they have toiled to build.”

Achievements and Impact

Born on July 21, 1944, Professor Mills became the President of Ghana after two previous defeats in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections.

‘Uncle Atta’, as he was affectionately called, immediately started working to fix the country’s economy after he assumed power on January 7, 2009.

As an educationist, Professor Mills also turned his attention to improving the quality of teaching and learning in the country. In this regard, the regime abolished the shift system in public schools and embarked on an aggressive removal of schools under trees.

Professor John Evans Atta Mills’ legacy continues to inspire Ghanaians to strive for peace, unity, and development. He demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of all citizens, regardless of their background or political affiliation.

Supreme Court Vindicates BoG In UniCredit Licence Revocation

The Supreme Court of Ghana has affirmed that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) acted within its legal rights when it revoked the operating licence of UniCredit Ghana Limited.

The highest court’s unanimous decision reverses an earlier judgment by the Court of Appeal, thus upholding the High Court’s initial ruling.

The Supreme Court panel consisting of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo; Justice Mariama Owusu; Justice Prof. Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko Mensa-Bonsu; Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu; and Justice Yaw Darko Asare ruled that the BoG did not err in its decision to declare UniCredit insolvent and subsequently revoke its licence.

Initial High Court Ruling

On August 16, 2019, the BoG declared UniCredit insolvent, citing its failure to meet required financial thresholds under section 123 of the Banks and Specialised Deposit Taking Institutions Act of 2016 (Act 930). This action led Hoda Holdings Ltd., the majority shareholder of UniCredit, to seek judicial review and an injunction against the BoG’s decision, arguing that UniCredit had not been given a fair hearing.

However, on March 18, 2021 the High Court, led by Justice Gifty Agyei Addo, ruled in favour of BoG. The court found that BoG had issued numerous notices for UniCredit to rectify its capital deficiencies, and revocation of the licence was a justified measure following UniCredit’s failure to comply. Justice Addo’s judgment emphasised that BoG’s actions were consistent with the regulatory framework provided by Act 930, thus placing UniCredit under receivership lawfully.

Court of Appeal’s Reversal

Dissatisfied with the High Court’s decision, Hoda Holdings appealed to the Court of Appeal. On July 7, 2022, the appellate court overturned the High Court’s ruling. The panel of Justices Janapare A. Bartels-Kodwo, Merley Wood and G.S. Suurbaareh argued that BoG should have adhered to the procedural steps outlined in section 16(3&4) of Act 930 before revoking UniCredit’s licence. They concluded that BoG’s failure to follow these steps deprived UniCredit of a fair hearing, thereby ruling in favour of Hoda Holdings.

The BoG, dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal’s decision, escalated the matter to the Supreme Court. In a final and binding verdict, the Supreme Court unanimously overturned the Court of Appeal’s judgment. The apex court’s ruling reaffirmed the High Court’s position that BoG had not committed any procedural errors in revoking UniCredit’s licence.

Delivering the ruling, the Chief Justice noted that BoG had acted within its mandate and followed due process in addressing UniCredit’s insolvency issues. “The evidence presented clearly indicates that UniCredit was insolvent prior to the revocation of its licence. The Bank of Ghana provided ample opportunities for rectification, and its actions were in full compliance with Act 930,” she stated.

Implications and reactions

This landmark decision by the Supreme Court reinforces the BoG’s regulatory authority and its commitment to maintaining stability within the financial sector. The ruling is seen as a validation of BoG’s stringent measures to protect depositors and ensure the soundness of financial institutions in Ghana.

In response to the ruling BoG expressed satisfaction, emphasising its dedication to upholding financial integrity. “The Supreme Court’s decision is a testament of our unwavering commitment to enforcing banking regulations and ensuring that financial institutions operate within the legal framework,” a BoG spokesperson remarked.

On the other hand, representatives of Hoda Holdings expressed their disappointment but acknowledged the finality of the Supreme Court’s decision. “While we respect the verdict, we maintain that our actions were in defence of our rights as stakeholders,” a spokesperson for Hoda Holdings commented.

The ruling marks an end to a protracted legal battle and sets a precedent for the interpretation of banking regulations in Ghana. It underscores the importance of adherence to regulatory directives and the judiciary’s role in resolving complex financial disputes.

As the financial sector continues to evolve, this decision reaffirms the BoG’s critical role in safeguarding the banking system’s stability and integrity.

This Is Your Last Warning, Abandon Presidential Ambition now Or .....– Cheddar Warned

Kumasi-based pastor, Apostle Kofi Nkansah-Sarkodie popularly known as St. Sark, founder and leader of Open Arms Ministry, has warned the leader of the New Force Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, to abandon his plans to run in this year’s presidential election.

According to St. Sark, failure to comply with this warning will spell disaster for Cheddar’s political career.

“I did a press conference and I advised him that he is young, in terms of politics and everything. So, if he wants to enter politics and become a president in Ghana, he should give himself 10 years.

“I told him but he didn’t listen and is still actively aiming to be president,” he said.

In a media briefing held at his church auditorium on Friday, July 19, 2024, St. Sark stated, “This is my last warning to him. If he doesn’t comply, his political career will come to an end on the 23rd of August because the kind of things I will say, it may affect his life throughout. I am telling him because I know where he is coming from.”

He emphasized that he has repeatedly advised Nana Kwame Bediako to reconsider his decision but to no avail.

“I know where he is coming from. I know everything about him, and that is why I am advising him to step down. I have advised that he is too young and too raw for the presidential seat,” he added.

14-Year-Old Spends 5 Months In Jail Despite Being Discharged By Court

An investigation has been launched to examine the circumstances surrounding the incarceration of a 14-year-old for five months, despite being discharged by a Circuit Court in Nkawie.

According to a starrfm.com.gh report, the case of the 14-year-old inmate was discovered when the Justice For All Program held an in-prison sitting on July 22 at the Kumasi Central Prisons.

Cases of 31 pre-trial inmates were heard by the organisation.

Addressing the incident, Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah, the Steering Committee Chairperson for the Justice For All Program, described it as unfortunate.

She stated that the 14-year-old’s case would have gone unnoticed if her outfit hadn’t engaged inmates.

“This is very unfortunate and we will ensure that this prisoner who has overstayed for five months leaves the Kumasi Central Prisons today before we also leave the premises. Had it not been the Justice For All program, we would not have uncovered this event,” she insisted.

The acting officer in charge of the Ashanti Region Prison Command, CSP Alex Adjei, expressed shock over the incident, saying a signed court warrant was presented to him by the investigator in charge of the case.

“I am surprised by this Nkawie case but it is not our fault. So far as the warrant is genuine, we don’t know any other thing until the police come for you,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah assured that the investigator responsible for this action will be held accountable and will be made to explain why the teenager spent 5 months in jail.

“I continue to ask who signed the warrant for the investigator to bring the accused person back to prison? In this case, he was discharged by the court. You have told me he has been released now but I am still probing for further answers. The Justice for All program needs more answers,” she stressed, the report added.

Trump Reacts To Biden’s Withdrawal From US Presidential Race

Republican presidential nominee for the November US election, Donald Trump, has reacted to President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race.

President Biden, in a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, July 21, 2024, said that even though he wanted to contest the upcoming November 2024 presidential election, he believes it is in the best interest of the country to step out of the race.

In response, via a statement issued on his Truth Social platform, Trump said his opponent was never fit to be president in the first place.

“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve—and never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement. All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t,” Trump said.

Trump added, “We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

He further described Biden as going down in history as the “worst president by far in the history of our country.”

In his announcement on Sunday, President Biden, who defeated Trump in his re-election bid in 2020, stated his endorsement for his vice president, Kamala Harris, as the nominee for the Democratic Party in the upcoming election.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” the president wrote.

Biden’s decision to pull out of the 2024 election comes on the back of growing concerns over his health and age.

Many notable Americans including members of his party called for him to step down from the race following his lackluster performance in the presidential debate held by CNN

I Am Becoming Useless Because of You” – Student Wrote to His Teacher As Teacher's Comment About Her Is Hunting Her

A heartfelt love letter written by a male student to his secondary school teacher has caused a stir after she shared it on social media.

In the letter, the young boy professed his deep affection for his teacher and earnestly pleaded for her love in return.

He implored her to overlook their age difference and instead, help him become a better person, as his feelings for her had left him feeling ‘useless.’

In his own words:

“I understand this might sound strange, but every word I write comes from my heart. From the very first moment I saw you at school, it was as if my brain stopped working. Every time our eyes meet, it feels like smoke is rising from within me. Your beauty has a profound impact on me. Although I am still in secondary school, I have big dreams of becoming a successful man.

I know some may see me as just a young boy, but when love takes hold, age becomes inconsequential. My thoughts are consumed by you, and it’s making me feel lost and ‘useless.’ Whenever I close my eyes, your image is all I can see. Please, kindly consider my request and help me find purpose.”

The teacher reposted the letter, originally written by the student, on social media, which quickly garnered attention and sparked various reactions.

Money Ritual: Woman Finds Maggots In Her Urine After Sex With Son

A woman, seeking refuge with a pastor, has shared an account of her family’s ordeal stemming from her son’s quest for financial freedom through alleged money rituals.

Aunty Grace, the mother, revealed that her 19-year-old son, who had dropped out of school after junior high, fell in with the wrong crowd and was introduced to an alleged money ritual.

She explained that this ritual has brought severe consequences to their family. She consequently sought help from Pastor Prince Elisha Osei Kofi during his confession session in a video shared on YouTube.

According to Aunty Grace, her son left home with friends and returned days later with newfound wealth.

“I have a 19-year-old child, and he has a lot of friends, so they have been going out often, and sometimes he doesn’t return for a week or two,” she said.

According to her, her son began to support the family financially, renovating their house and providing food after he returned from his regular trip. However, this sudden change came at a high cost.

She narrated that she noticed a deep sore on her son’s thigh, infested with maggots and despite her inquiries, he refused to explain the cause.

“One day, he left and returned two months later with a car. I asked him where he got the car from, and he told me not to be afraid. Then he started buying things for the house, like rice and other provisions. He left again and returned three months later, wanting to renovate the house, which he did.

“I noticed he started wearing long dresses with a strong smell coming from him. I noticed a strong smell as I got closer to him. Later, I discovered he had a large, deep sore on his thigh with maggots and other insects coming out of it.

“I asked him how it happened, but he couldn’t explain. He had become aggressive sleeping with girls indiscriminately,” she asserted.

She further revealed that eventually, one of his friends disclosed that the sore would only heal if Aunty Grace had sexual relations with her son, as part of the sacrificial demands tied to their source of wealth.

“So, I called his friend, and he told me that I shouldn’t inform anybody about where they went but my son wouldn’t get better unless I slept with him to heal him.

“One day, my son came to me and said he wanted to sleep with me. I had no option but to allow it. After having multiple sexes with him, I realized that the sores were healing, and later, he became completely healed.

She now suffers from a strong stench and passes maggots in her urine, a condition she believes is linked to the ritual.

“So, I slept with him several times and after he was completely healed, I started struggling to urinate. When I urinate, I get a foul smell and maggots in my urine. I don’t even know where my son is now.

“When I urinate, I see the maggots that were in his thigh sore in my urine and I am struggling to survive,” she said.

Euro 2024 Market Value Update: Yamal Makes History, Whilst Rodri & Mainoo Also Rise

As many as 35 players used this summer’s European Championship to increase their market value, with their performances on the big stage shining through and earning them a rise. Six of those players lifted the trophy into the Berlin night sky on Sunday evening, with the squad of European champions Spain increasing by +€70 million in total. That takes the Spain squad value over the billion mark to around €1.04b. Unsurprisingly, the biggest increase of all Euro 2024 participants goes to the teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The tricky winger turned 17 last week in the run up to the final and defied his youth once again on the biggest stage, providing the assist for Nico Williams’ opening goal. He now, having only just hit 17 years of age, has a new market value of €120m – +€30m from his previous value of €90m.

After a fabulous club season, the best young player of the tournament, Yamal, is the first player under 19 years of age to break the €100m mark in the entire history of Transfermarkt market values, which have been recorded since 2004. After his 16th birthday almost exactly a year ago, the Barcelona talent entered the league with a record market value of €25m, and after the Euro 2024 triumph, his value is continuing to soar. “Yamal was a household name for most football fans, but now the whole world knows him. Best young player of the tournament, top assister in the entire tournament. At 17 years old, he has broken a number of records and made a decisive contribution to the European Championship title, especially in the semi-finals and the final,” says Tobias Blaseio, market value admin for Spain at Transfermarkt, explaining the renewed increase.

Rodri among other Spanish players rising

The trio of Euro 2024 player of the tournament Rodri,  Athletic Club’s Williams and RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo all saw their market values rise by +€10m. Rodri now is the most valuable holding midfielder in world football at €120m, leaving England and Arsenal’s Declan Rice behind on €110m. Williams now boasts a value of €70m, making him the fifth most valuable left-winger in the world. Olmo rises to a €60m market value. Two Spanish players who surprised many people with their superb tournaments after fairly underwhelming club seasons were midfielder Fabián Ruiz and left-back Marc Cucurella – they both rise by +€5m taking their market values to €35m and €30m respectively.

Biggest Market Value Increases From Euro 2024 update

“Rodri is Spain’s most valuable player in history, beating his own record he already held at €110m. Alongside Álvaro Morata, he has once again emerged as the clear leader of the Furia Roja and carried the team on his shoulders throughout the tournament. He took on the role of Sergio Busquets in midfield. Great modesty on and off the pitch, exquisite quality, control and calm are the trademarks of the most reliable player of the entire Euros. He should be one of the favourites for the Ballon d’Or, as should some other Spaniards such as Dani Carvajal. It has been 64 years since a Spaniard won its first and last Ballon d’Or, despite the five trophies the team has won since 2008,” says Iván Turmo, Transfermarkt Area Manager Spain, about Rodri & Co.

Kobbie Mainoo England’s only winner

Despite making it all the way to the final of the competition, only one member of the England squad for Euro 2024 saw his market value increase. Teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo went into the tournament as the player with the least senior minutes under his belt across the squads from all 24 nations. He wasn’t a starter in the groups, but forced his way into the team for the knockout stages, and showed composure beyond his years, as he became one of the standout performers in the Three Lions’s run to the final in Berlin. The Manchester United midfielder subsequently see’s his market value increase by +€5m to a new figure of €55m. The rise makes Mainoo the fifth most valuable teenager in world football, and Man United’s fourth most valuable players

Why players will only be upgraded in the market value update after Euro 2024

Artjom Zavodnyk, Transfermarkt coordinator for market values and international operations, explains why there are only upgrades: “The European Championship is a showcase for players to attract the eyes of the world. Therefore, only footballers who were able to significantly improve their status during the tournament and/or who played their way into the international spotlight were considered, which ultimately leads to increased interest on the transfer market. For example, Kylian Mbappé is no less important in world football. But Lamine Yamal has a different standing after the tournament than before.”

How the transfer market values work

The transfer market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The aim is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are given here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for the detailed market value definition).

Following his impressive performance with some youth teams in the United States of America, Ghanaian youngster Michael Kofi Essien is making his way into Europe, where the pinnacle of the game is experienced

.

Michael Kofi Essien, according to GhanaWeb sources, is set to train with Latvian side Saldus SS / Leevon.

It is believed that the 17-year-old will be training with the club for three weeks, with expectations rife that he will be able to land a permanent deal by the end of the trial period.

Kofi Essien is a young forward, capable of playing across the front three roles and behind the striker.

The young striker is rapid and has an incredible skillset akin to French football greats Kylian Mbappe and Thierry Henry.

Earlier this year, he played an instrumental role for FCDA 2007 Boys Red in their conquest of the 2024 Phoenix Cup.

The teenage prodigy scored and bagged four assists in the tournament to power his side to the ultimate victory.
